Better Streets vs wharf Owners barron vs Baltimore, 1833

When Baltimore set out to open and grade the streets that Thomas Poppleton projected on his map of the city, the rains came and washed the dirt into the harbor of Fells Point.  The Wharf owners were not happy, but the city prevailed.

Lighting the streets:

David Melville, Rebrandt Peale

and the Peale Museum, 1814-1816

Rembrandt Peale is rightfully credited with bringing gas lighting to the streets of Baltimore in 1816, but he was preceded in demonstrating the idea to the Citizens of Baltimore in 1814 by David Melville who arrived when the city was concentrating on defending itself and not lighting its streets.
